Watching at the thieves

Project lead at IMP (PI: Wolf B. Frommer)
We are  interested in the bacterial leaf blight (BB) disease of rice caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo). The postulate is that a pathogen infects a host to multiply.  For bacterial or fungal pathogens this means in fine nutrition. Thus,  a very fundamental question is how pathogens feed in the host. If we understand this, we understand the basements of host-pathogen systems.  The analogy with thieves is very powerful since the same needs are driving both. On one hand, there is a need to get valuable goods (such as expensive items from a house owner or sucrose from the host plant) and on the other hand, there is the need to not be seen (by the alarm system for the thieves or the defense system for the plant-pathogens). Is there something more challenging than to look at someone or something that wishes to stay hidden?
